For this updated review, 43 randomised clinical trials involving 4966 women with non-viable pregnancies at less than 24 weeks' gestation were included. The main interventions examined were vaginal, sublingual, oral and buccal misoprostol, mifepristone and vaginal gemeprost.

It makes the case for WHO to extend the 42-day post-partum threshold to capture the full duration of risk of pregnancy-related deaths. There is a need for a new indicator to track late pregnancy-related deaths that occur beyond 42 days, which are otherwise excluded from global maternal health surveillance efforts.
Maternal deaths comprise deaths of women who are pregnant or within 42 days of the termination of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management (other than unintentional injuries or incidental causes).
