Grading Scale. In January 2015, the North Carolina State Board of Education approved a standard 10-point grading scale to begin with the 2015-16 school year for all students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Grading scales can be 1 to 8, 1 to 4, or A through G, where A is on a 4.0 scale or on a 5.0 scale. The most common scale is now 1 to 7, with 9 being the highest grade obtained. In addition, degrees are awarded in a Class, depending on the grades received.
The 100-point scale is a percentage-based grading system. In a percentage-based system, each assignment regardless of size, type, or complexity is given a percentage score: four correct answers out of five is a score of 80%.
