Getting your pets ready to fly takes a little legwork, but the information you provide helps us keep your pets safe and comfortable throughout their journey. Certain breeds and animal species are not allowed into some countries. We strongly recommend that you discuss your pet's travel plans with a veterinarian well before their travel, to make sure your pet meets all the import regulations and is ready for travel. American Airlines will not knowingly accept a dog or cat that has been or appears to have been sedated. Our recommended alternative is to acclimate your pet to its travel container as far in advance of the trip as possible.
When you book your animal with us, we'll give you an air waybill number. You can enter your air waybill number into our online tracking tool to monitor your pet's status. You can contact our dedicated 24-hour animal desk at 1-800-227-4622 or PetEmbark@aa.com.
Depending on animal breed and size, they can travel as a carry-on or be transported through American Airlines Cargo. Carry-on pets are limited to cats and dogs that meet the size, age and destination requirements.
To make sure your pet has a comfortable flight, we have strict kennel requirements designed to keep your pet safe. Failure to meet all kennel requirements will result in your animal not being able to travel on the designated flight.
