Finland operated a wide variety of aircraft during World War II from several countries. The main objective of the Finnish Air Force during World War II was to maintain air superiority over Finland to prevent Soviet aircraft reinforcing the advance of Soviet ground forces into Finland.
Finland is a partner in NATO's Strategic Airlift Capability and has access to 100 flight hours from the C-17's every year (3.2%). The aircraft operate from Pápa Air Base in Hungary.

The air force began the Continuation War with 120 fighters (Brewsters, Fiats, Curtisses, Morane-Saulniers, and Hurricanes) and 58 mostly obsolete reconnaissance planes. Initially, the Finns were quite successful against the Soviets, achieving a 32:1 exchange ratio.
