The government regulates private schools through the Private School Registration Act and commits significant budget to the education sector, including 1.4 trillion kyats for 2014-15. The number of private schools in Myanmar has grown rapidly from just over 50 in 2012-13 to 585 in 2016-17, an increase of over 100 schools per year.
In 2019–2020, there were 730 registered national private schools, with a total enrollment of 179,182 students (MIMU 2021). Most of these schools are in Yangon and Mandalay, Myanmar’s two largest cities, catering mainly to wealthy families. The average annual school tuition fee at these schools is estimated at 800,000
Since the passing of the new Private Schools Law in late 2011, the path has opened for new private schools to officially register, expanding and legitimising the private education sector.
