We are going to NZ and friends have suggested an overnight cruise in Milford sound. Trying to decide if there is anything super special about the overnight as opposed to doing a daytime cruise and kayak.

I would have to agree with the concensus on this post that acoording to the many reviews a overnight cruise on Doubtful sound is the one you should take and if you don't have time just do the day cruise on Milford sound that looks stunning especially after rain when the waterfalls are flowing.
5 Απρ 2017 · We booked our overnight cruise for Doubtful Sound with real journeys and was not disappointed with the whole experience! We got picked up by Carl on time and the first part of a journey was a 2.5hr drive from Queenstown to Maurpouri where we would pick up our first boat.
Been reading mixed reviews on the Milford sound overnight cruise. Some say it's just 3 hours of cruising overall and that the dolphins can be seen in the daytime cruise as all. Also, does this need an advance booking?
