Maryland Appellate Court Opinions. Effective December 14, 2022, the former Court of Appeals of Maryland is renamed the Supreme Court of Maryland and the Court of Special Appeals is renamed the Appellate Court of Maryland.
The Appellate Court of Maryland hears appeals from the circuit courts and orphan’s courts. It does not hear appeals that come from any other courts. Sometimes a circuit court case must instead be appealed to the Supreme Court of Maryland.
The Appellate Court of Maryland is the intermediate appellate court for the U.S. state of Maryland. The Appellate Court of Maryland was created in 1966 in response to the rapidly growing caseload in the Supreme Court of Maryland.
The Supreme Court of Maryland (previously the Maryland Court of Appeals) is the highest court of the U.S. state of Maryland. The court, which is composed of one chief justice and six associate justices, meets in the Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal Building in the state capital, Annapolis .
Located in Annapolis, the Maryland Supreme Court is the highest court in Maryland. (It was known as the Maryland Court of Appeals until December 14, 2022, when a constitutional amendment changed its name.)
