NPSM Pipe Thread ANSI B 1.20.1-1983 (R1992) Parallel pipe thread for mechanical joints, not self-sealing. While external and internal tapered pipe threads for joints can be used for all purposes, there are also mechanical joints where parallel threads work better.
NPS or National Pipe Straight threads have a nominal size of 1/8 inch to 1 1 2 pipe thread dimensions. The threads that can be found on National Pipe Straight threads are designed in a way that are intended to create a tight seal when the pipes are joined together.
NPT stands for National Pipe Tapered threads. The basic profile is a 60° truncated triangle similar to the Unified Inch threads (UNC/UNF). The main difference is that the thread profile is tapered at an angle of 1°47′ (0.75 in/ft or 62.5 mm/m) relative to the axis.
