The Airport/Facility Directory is in many ways the FAA's effort to provide easy access information to help you, the pilot. The book is designed to contain information that simply cannot be put on the charts. For example, your sectional will tell you the longest runway at an airport.

The chart legends list aeronautical symbols with a brief description of what each symbol depicts. This section will provide a more detailed discussion of some of the symbols and how they are used on IFR charts.
Airports having Control Towers are shown in Blue, all others in Magenta. Consult Airport/Facility Directory (A/FD) for details involving airport lighting, navigation aids, and services. For additional symbol information refer to the Chart User’s Guide.
3.1 AIRPORT/FACILITY DIRECTORY (AFD) The Supplement shall contain an Airport/Facility Directory and supplementary textual, tabulated, and graphic data, as required, to support flight operations. Data published will be for use in conjunction with US Government Enroute and Visual Charts and the Flight Information Handbook.
Airports. The location of each airport and presence of control towers is indicated with a circle, or with an outline of the hard-surfaced runways (if over 8,069 feet long). Blue shows an airport with a control tower and magenta for others. Military airstrips (without hard-surface runways) are shown with two concentric circles.
