Check in for your flight and print your boarding pass 1 to 24 hours prior to your scheduled departure.
You must be checked in with a valid boarding pass and available for boarding at the gate no later than 30 minutes before your flight. Being late may cause the cancellation of your reserved seats and/or your entire reservation.

AFAIK, the only indication that you're checked in is the presence of the boarding pass(es) in the app. If you have copied your boarding pass to your wallet, you are checked in.
By using online check-in, you can check-in anywhere from 1 to 24 hours before departure and print out your boarding pass yourself or have it sent to your mobile phone. With online check-in, you can also change your seat assignment, upgrade to First Class, and print a receipt for your flight.
