Many of the millions of people who traveled west during this period made their homes in groups of wagons called wagon trains. Women were responsible for recreating the comforts of home while on the trail. This was a difficult task because wagon travel wasn’t comfortable at all.
What factors attracted different groups of settlers to different locations in the west? What troubles did settlers face on their journeys west? What happened to the people who already occupied the lands that many settlers moved into?
Journeys West engages students in inquiry into the theme of journeys through the exploration of topics such as the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the California Gold Rush, the Oregon Trail, Fur Traders and Native Americans.
The documents in this set can be used to help students explore westward expansion of the United States and the resulting interactions among the West’s many cultural groups. Students could imagine that they are settlers from the East or Midwest, journeying to the West to start a new home.
In addition to a significant European migration westward, several thousand African Americans migrated west following the Civil War, as much to escape the racism and violence of the Old South as to find new economic opportunities.
Hispanic communities in the Southwest, diverse Indian tribes throughout the western states, as well as other settlers from Asia and Western Europe already lived in many parts of the country. American expansion would necessitate a far more complex and involved exchange than simply filling space.
