The hour has a special meaning in Jewish law. "The third hour of the day" doesn't mean 3:00 a.m., or three sixty-minute hours after sunrise. Rather, an hour in halacha is calculated by taking the total time of daylight of a particular day, from sunrise until sunset,1 and dividing it into twelve equal parts.

When reading the Bible, Tanakh (Hebrew Scriptures / Old Testament) or Brit Chadashah (New Testament), always refer to the Hebrew Calendar for dates, and use the relative hour, also known as the Halachic hour, for times.
Rishon literally means “first”, Sheni means “second”, Shlishi means “third” and so on. However, the Hebrew word שבת (Shabbat) means “stopped working” or “rested”. According to the Book of Genesis, God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh day.
The Hebrew word for this hour of prayer is "Shacharit"(morning). According to Jewish time this is the 3 rd hour (the third hour from sunrise); according to Roman time this is the 9 th hour (Roman time for each day began at 12 midnight).
1 & 2 are combined: וְאַלתִּֿשְׁתּוּ שְׁלשֶׁת יָמִים לַיְלָה וָיוֺם do not eat and do not drink for thee days, night or day (see Zechariah 14:7 below.

16 Αυγ 2022 · When the Bible mentions a specific hour of the day, it is almost always using Jewish time (John’s gospel may have some exceptions), therefore: The 3rd hour of the day (about 3 hours after sunrise) = roughly 9:00am our time. The 6th hour of the day (about 6 hours after sunrise) = roughly 12:00pm (noon) our time.
