Reykjavik, by far and large, is the cheapest city to fly to Europe from the US. The problem, however, is that Iceland is far from continental Europe so you would need an additional flight to go anywhere else.
Try flying to Finland and tell me it's more expensive. It was consistently around 700 for quite a while about 3 years ago, from Chicago. Dublin is definitely the cheapest in my experience though.
There's no one airport that's reliably cheapest. Usually you can find bargains to second-tier airports (e.g., Barcelona, Dusseldorf, Lyon, etc.) when airlines are having sales, and the rest of the time the cheapest flights are Amsterdam, Dublin, and Madrid.
