They offer “package rates” (usually 20% cheaper) but must be booked in conjunction with other arrangements, such as flights, or a rental car. Similarly, some airlines also offer “package rates” on their airfares, but must be booked with accommodation or a cruise.
Cheap can sometimes come with a price. Even if it costs a bit more, I'm happy to let Expedia/Kayak/whatever help with discovery, but when it is time to purchase, I do it straight from the provider. Should something go awry, I prefer to work directly with the folks that can help rather than have an impotent third agent in the way.
Rent your cars direct from agencies. Buy your flights directly from airlines. Book rooms directly from hotels.
I've been looking into buying a roundtrip flight to Europe from the US using expedia, and it seems like if I add a car rental the overall price is actually significantly CHEAPER than without the car rental. Is this common? And what is stopping me from adding the car rental to my reservation and then just never picking up the car?
On an anecdotal note, I recently compared prices for a car rental in Expedia with the company and it was by far cheaper on the company website. Plus it offered me more options for the rental that Expedia didn't have.
What I usually do is search up my desired package on Expedia and then compare the price of booking directly. Then I decide if the price difference (savings) is large enough to go with Expedia or just book directly if there isn’t that much difference and cut out the “middle man”.
For car rentals in the USA I always go through Expedia. They have lower rates than the rental car companies for the same car (and sometimes more choices). Rental car insurance is really horrible.
