I've had very few problems with Spirit. They had been my short trip (3-5 day) goto airline as I have the largest bag possible that fits under the seats. Now they stopped flying to LA and Florida direct from my location and it sucks.
From what I've heard, it's tolerable. What you need to be prepared for is if things go wrong--the plane breaks, the weather is bad, things like that. Spirit doesn't interline with other carriers, so they won't move you to another airline. Be aware of that, and you'll probably come through ok.
