Selected Works. The return of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to Greece was received with great excitement around the world, however, there was also great anxiety because the existing facilities was far from adequate and the city lacked experience with constructing such large-scale projects.
The Sports Complex includes the Olympic Stadium in Athens, the Olympic Hall roof, the Olympic Aquatic Center, the sixteen courts of the Olympic Tennis Center and the Olympic Velodrome. A major boulevard called Central Axis organizes access to the various stadiums.
Calatrava reorganized the existing 100-hectare area and designed a new roof for the Olympic Stadium; a new roof and refurbishing of the Velodrome; entrance plazas; and entrance canopies for the entire complex.
The Olympic Stadium of Athens ‘Spyros Louis’ is a part of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex. It is named after the first modern Olympic marathon race winner in 1896, Spyros Louis. The stadium hosts one of the biggest sport clubs in Greece, AEK Athens.
The project for the aesthetic integration of the Athens Olympic Centre (OAKA), Greece was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The project included the following: Service infrastructure, outdoor areas and surrounding area of the Athens Olympic Centre; Velodrome Roof; Redesign of velodrome interior (5,250 spectators capacity)
Two of the prominent new architectural features are Calatrava’s signature roofs for the two largest venues in the OAKA: the Olympic Stadium, location of the opening and closing ceremonies, track and field events, and men’s soccer final, and the Velodrome, locale for indoor bicycling events.
Plans of the new Olympic Complex. As most people know, the Athens Olympic Sports Complex ( AOSC) went through a large scale upgrading from 2002 to 2004, in view of the Olympic Games. The planning of this project was undertaken by the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
