Lufenuron is available as an oral suspension for cats, an injectable for cats, and an oral tablet for dogs. It is approved for use in dogs and cats 6 weeks of age and older for the control of flea populations.
Cats: suspension is given orally by mixing into wet food at the recommended minimum dosage of 30 milligrams per kilogram of body weight every 30 days; injectable is injected subcutaneously at the recommended minimum dose of 10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight every 6 months.
Lufenuron (brand name: Program®) is an insect growth regulator that controls flea infestations in dogs, cats, rabbits, and ferrets. It is frequently found in combination with other medications such as milbemycin and/or praziquantel (brand names: Sentinel®, Spectrum®).
Insects are protected in the world by a hard exoskeleton made of a material called chitin. Lufenuron, Program's active ingredient, inhibits the production of chitin in insects.
