Dorothy Parker was an American satirist known for her wit. The short story "New York to Detroit" describes a phone call between a worried woman, Jean, in New York and her indifferent boyfriend, Jack, in Detroit.

Dorothy Parker (née Rothschild; August 22, 1893 – June 7, 1967) was an American poet and writer of fiction, plays and screenplays based in New York; she was known for her caustic wisecracks, and eye for 20th-century urban foibles.
During the 1920s, she published around 300 poems in publications like Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. Some of the best Dorothy Parker poems include the likes of ‘The Choice,’ ‘But Not Forgotten,’ ‘Resumé,’ and ‘A Dream Lies Dead.’
Between the years 1927 and 1933 Parker wrote book reviews for The New Yorker. Her texts continued appear in the magazine at irregular intervals until 1955.
