The two pits located on the north side of the airfield are believed to have been constructed when the airfield was upgraded to Very Heavy Bomber (VHB) configuration. The USAF Strategic Air Command (SAC) based Boeing B-50's at Sculthorpe in the late 1940's and the early 1950's.
The RAF Sculthorpe Heritage Centre tells the history and stories of North Norfolk's only USAF atomic base. It was once the largest and most strategically important American airbase and home to 10,000 personnel.
