UChicago faculty began collecting maps in 1927. Now housed in the Library, the collection includes over 475,000 maps, 10,000 air photos, 2,000 books, and hundreds of gigabytes of spatial data.
How to find maps in the University of Chicago Map Collection. Like most large map libraries, the Map Collection is a “mediated” collection. You must request maps from staff members. It’s perfectly acceptable to bring a general question to staff.
The Map Collection is open Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM to UChicago students, faculty, and staff. They may also request map scans by using Scan and Deliver: Find a map in the collection in the Library Catalog.
Digital Map Collections. Three ways to view Library maps online: Library Digital Collections. The maps in our Digital Collections are organized by theme and date. LUNA. The LUNA image platform allows users to browse all our digitized maps at once. Digital map collections from other institutions are also browsable via LUNA. BTAA Geoportal.
The Collection supports urban studies by acquiring urban maps for all parts of the world. Its holdings of 18th, 19th, and early 20th-century maps of European and American cities are noteworthy. Its Chicago collection is also significant.
