The U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School—usually referred to as "the Prep School" or "The P School"—was established in May 1961. The school's founder and first commander was Colonel Lee Charles Black. It is located on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy near the Community Center.
This 10-month school is designed to academically, physically and militarily prepare selected young men and women to potentially go on to the United States Air Force Academy and succeed. About 15 percent of every graduating class at the Academy started out by attending the prep school.
The Preparatory School academic curriculum is delivered over four academic quarters during a 10-month program. It is designed to lay the groundwork for success in required Academy classes, with a focus on English, math and science.
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS. All prospective cadet candidates must: Be at least 17 years old and not have passed their 22 birthday by July 1 of the year they enter the Preparatory School. Be eligible to be a U.S. citizen. Be unmarried and have no dependents. Meet specific medical standards for a commission in the Air Force. Active Duty Airmen.
The prep school's mission is to motivate, prepare, and evaluate selected candidates in an academic, military, moral, and physical environment, to perform successfully and enhance diversity at the Air Force Academy.
