5 Ιαν 2022 · In a 2-2-1 press, 2 players start on either side of the offensive team’s free throw line, 2 players start just ahead of the half court line, and 1 player stays back to guard the basket. This type of press is a zone press.
To put it simply, the 1-3-1 press defense is more or less a containment-type press that seeks to disrupt the rhythm and flow of the offensive team and force them to execute several passes as they attempt to break the press.
While in most defenses you always have a player defending directly between the opponent with the basketball and the basket, the 1-3-1 instead cuts off normal passing lanes and forces the offensive team to throw lob passes over the defense, pass slow bounce passes around the defense or attack off the dribble.
