In the chapter "Il verbo [1]" of the book Grammatica e pratica della lingua italiana per studenti stranieri, by Federica Colombo, you can read: Per la forma di cortesia si usa la 3ª persona singolare. Il pronome Lei sostituisce nell'italiano di oggi la forma Ella, sia al femminile che al maschile (Lei mi aspetti qui). Quando Lei è riferito a un uomo, c'è il problema dell'accordo con il verbo: "femminile (secondo grammatica) o maschile (secondo natura)?", come scrive Luca Serianni ( Italiano , Garzanti, 1988).
