July 28 – American Airlines Flight 63, a Douglas DC-3 named the Flagship Ohio, crashed near Trammel, Kentucky, United States, after the crew lost control in severe turbulence and violent downdrafts; 20 of the 22 people on board are killed.
April 27, 1976: American Airlines Flight 625, a Boeing 727, crashed on approach to Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, resulting in a considerable number of fatalities (37 died of the 88 on board). The aircraft overran a short runway, and pilot error was cited.
