The initial Flag of East Germany (GDR) adopted in 1949 was identical to that of West Germany (FRG). In 1959, government of this country issued a new version of the flag bearing the national emblem, serving to distinguish East from West.
After the East German national flag was changed in 1959, neither country accepted the flag of the other. As a compromise, a new flag was used by the United Team of Germany from 1960 to 1964, featuring the black-red-gold tricolour defaced with white Olympic rings in the red stripe.

Ratio 3:5. The coat of arms shows a hammer and compass in a ring of rye, symbolising the working class, intelligentsia, and farmers.
30 Μαΐ 2024 · The plain tricolour was also used in the communist-dominated German Democratic Republic (GDR; East Germany), although its coat of arms was added to the tricolour in 1959. The GDR flag disappeared in 1990 when the two Germanys were reunited as a single state.
