ITA Matrix, along with other search engines, are a good tool for judging the cost of fares on different routes. That is what I use them for, but always go to the airline sites to book. Even on airline sites fares can change in the blink of an eye as fare buckets get sold out.

I use ITA matrix and print the itinerary and the portion that states how to buy the ticket and includes the fare instruction. I am trying to get a decent airfare to Australia and then to New Zealand and then back to Canada.
