A laboratory (lab) test checks a sample of your blood, urine (pee), or other body fluid or tissue to learn about your health. The sample is sent to a lab where health care professionals test it to see if it contains certain substances and, if so, how much.
A patient's blood test values should be interpreted based on the reference value of the laboratory in which the test was done; the laboratory typically provides these values with the test result. Representative values are listed in alphabetical order in the following table.
Laboratory testing involves the checking of blood, urine, and body tissue samples in order to see if the resulting lab values fall within the normal range. Lab values are used to determine a patient’s overall health and well-being.
