Building America determines building practices based on climate zones to achieve the most energy savings in a home. This page offers some general guidelines on the definitions of the various climate regions based on heating degree-days, average temperatures, and precipitation.
For windows receiving direct sunlight, look for ENERGY STAR certified windows for the southern climate zone, which will have a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.25 or lower and a U-Factor of 0.40 or less for the whole window; SHGC of 0.28 or lower and a U-Factor of 0.60 or less for skylights.
