I will be the first to say that Spirit is one of the worst airlines ever. However all US airlines are incredibly safe. The unsafest part of flying is always getting to & from the airport.
From what I've heard, it's tolerable. What you need to be prepared for is if things go wrong--the plane breaks, the weather is bad, things like that. Spirit doesn't interline with other carriers, so they won't move you to another airline. Be aware of that, and you'll probably come through ok.
