This is a list of island countries. An island is a landmass (smaller than a continent) that is surrounded by water. Many island countries are spread over an archipelago, as is the case with Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines—these countries consist of thousands of islands.
List of islands by area. This list includes all islands in the world larger than 2,500 km 2 (970 sq mi) and most of the islands over 1,000 km 2 (390 sq mi), sorted in descending order by area. For size and location reference, four very large continental landmasses are also shown.

Mexico and Central America’s western coast are connected to the mountainous west, while its lowlands and coastal plains extend into the eastern region.
