This comparatively small area is home to the enigmatic West and East Caucasian tur, the easternmost subspecies of chamois, the bezoar wild goat and the Asiatic mouflon.

There are about 130 mammal species in the Caucasus Hotspot, nearly 20 of which are endemic. Several threatened large mammal species are found here, including the Endangered Caucasian tur (Capra caucasica), a member of the goat family.
The Caucasus is one of the most biologically rich regions on Earth. Home to an unusually high number of endemic plant and animal species, it ranks as one of the world’s biodiversity “hotspots” according to both Conservation International and WWF.
Due to the high biodiversity of the Caucasus Ecoregion, it has been listed as one of WWF’s 35 Priority Places, along with the Amazon and Guianas and the African Rift Lakes. Wildlife is crucial to nature’s delicate web of life, a web that we as humans depend on.
