There was a big problem – he was unhappy and searching for identity. “It took me years to find out how to just be myself and relax and enjoy what I was doing –I used to worry and was very self-conscious,” said Christie, 74.
Christie spent the early 1970s in London, largely outside of the music industry and battling drug addiction. In 1971 he released a concept album called Paint America Love and was married in London to former UK beauty queen Francesca Winfield.
