Legacy’s mission is to keep Indy’s history alive and to share it with future generations. Our programs include projects that directly serve Indy families, and we also offer education and outreach programs for schools, libraries, veterans’ groups, service organizations, museums, and media.

Hours & Location. ABOUT THE MEMORIAL AND MUSEUM. The Indiana War Memorial— unequivocally the crown jewel of the War Memorial Plaza National Historic District—was built to honor Hoosier veterans of World War I.
This national memorial is the climax of a 50-year dream by the crew members who survived the sinking of the cruiser USS Indianapolis in 1945. They worked tirelessly to erect a fitting memorial to their missing shipmates until it was formally dedicated in 1995.

More than three-quarters of a century has passed since the fatal torpedo attack and sinking of USS Indianapolis (CA-35) on July 30, 1945. Our solemn promise is to keep the story alive and bring recognition to the ship’s valiant crew. In the January 2021, Legacy launched a new program for Student Members, ages 5 to 18.
