All cases classified as deaths by suicide since 2014 that had valid data for sexual orientation or transgender identity were included from states that started participating in NVDRS before 2016. The latest year of data available was 2019. Valid n = 4,086, including 673 LGBTQ+ cases.

Results: There were a total of 123,289 suicide decedents from 18 states participating in National Violent Death Reporting System during 2003–2014; of whom, 621 (0.5%) were identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
9 Νοε 2021 · Among lesbian or gay women and bisexual women, 11% to 20% had experienced thoughts of suicide, 7% had made a suicide plan, and about 3% had made a suicide attempt. Among gay and bisexual men, the data showed no differences in suicide risk according to race/ethnicity.
LGBTQ+ young people attempted suicide in the past year. 50% of LGBTQ+ young people who wanted mental health care in the past year were not able to get it. More than half (54%) of transgender and nonbinary young people found their school to be gender-affirming, and those who did reported lower rates of attempting suicide.
