The real advantage is free cancelation and free bags (most airlines don't even allow a carry on on their base fare anymore). Usually SW is in the same ballpark as United basic economy for example, but on United I need to spend an extra $25 to bring a carry-on, so I'll j do SW.
This is a logistical nightmare, there are typically 2 pilots and 4 flight attendants on each flight. Say 1/3 of the crew calls out, you now have to pray the airline has enough crew on stand by or on call that can cover for the 30% of “sick crew”.

Ride flight crew. Was on a flight yesterday from BWI to SRQ - 7:25 pm. It was the rudest flight crew I have ever encountered. Everyone was talking about it. There was one older woman who should not be in customer service. She was barking orders at people. There is a way to speak to people and she is not it.
Why? If your baggage is lost and only the flight crew can help retrieve it, What can you do with the information of where it is? the flight crew knows this most of the time. It just takes time to get to it..
