The 7.5×54mm French MAS or 7.5 French cartridge was developed by France as an update to the 7.5×57mm MAS mod. 1924 cartridge. It replaced the obsolete 8 mm Lebel round used during World War I. In terms of power it is somewhat comparable to the 7.62×51mm NATO/.308 Winchester round.
The MAS-36 is a short carbine-style rifle with a two-piece stock and slab-sided receiver. It is chambered for the modern rimless 7.5×54mm French cartridge; a shortened version of the 7.5×57mm MAS mod. 1924 cartridge that had been introduced in 1924 (then modified in 1929), for France's FM 24/29 light machine gun.

7.5 X 54 FRENCH Mle. 29. At the end of WW1 the French faced the decision to replace the ageing 8mm Lebel and Berthier rifles with a more modern cartridge. Various experimental rounds were tested during that time period but in 1924 the 7.5 x 58 M24 was developed.
