In a linear model, the whole (or unit) is represented by a specified interval on a number line. Then fractions are represented as lengths of intervals in comparison to the length of the whole.
Fractions can be a tricky concept to teach, but this interactive tool uses fun visual models like strips, circles, and grids to provide a clear visual understanding of equal parts, the numerator and denominator, proper fractions, and mixed numbers.
When drawing fraction visual models for your students, don’t stress that models are exactly proportional (that’s impossible). But they should look as if they’re cut into equal parts. And a visual model of ⅓ x ¼ shouldn’t just be a model of 1/12. Demonstrate what is happening when we multiply a fraction by a fraction.
You can actually multiply by any number, as long as you multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number. For example, if you start with 1/2, you can multiply both the numerator and denominator by 3 to get 3/6, which is equivalent.
