I just went into AirTran site to select our seat assignment and for the "available seats" there is an additional charge of $6 to $25. We have a change of plane so I am sure there will be a charge for their "available" seats as well.

Now I see that for international AirTran flights one must check-in in person at the airport (not online).
A seat assignment doesn't guarantee your seat should the flight be overbooked. I've never been kicked off a flight in well over 1 million miles of travel. Check-in online, arrive at the airport in good time and you're probably ahead of most people who get booted off the flight.
