  1. Reykjavik, by far and large, is the cheapest city to fly to Europe from the US. The problem, however, is that Iceland is far from continental Europe so you would need an additional flight to go anywhere else.

  2. AMS (Amsterdam Schipol) is one of the cheapest to fly into; it's a major hub so if you want to go somewhere from there it's not too hard. If you want to save money, avoid London like the plague. Amsterdam can be cheap if done right; believe it or not, staying in the red light district isn't bad and is a bit cheaper than going to the major hotels.

  3. Years ago during Euro 2012, I did a trip across Europe. Western and Eastern. I was in Bratislava and was eating at a McDonalds when a couple of teens (maybe 15/16 year olds) walked by the window and stopped. They noticed me and came in and asked for a photo. I still don't know if they assumed I was a rapper or just wanted to have a laugh.

  4. OP, I know you asked specifically about European countries because of cheap weekend flights, but please also consider the Caribbean (including PR, DR, VI and the WHOLE archipelago down to Aruba, Curaçao and Margarita); there's a wealth of culture and beauty in the diaspora.

  5. From where I am in Toronto (yes I know that's nowhere near Seattle) flights to Lisbon are often the cheapest direct flights to Europe. Transferring in NYC often creates cheaper options but is not worth the hassle IMO.

  6. Western Europe and Scandinavia is getting used to black people, and are largely tolerant, especially in the cities. You might at worse face people with negative experiences from mentally troubled African refugees and might want to make it clear that you are American.

  7. Pretty easy to get to and inexpensive generally if you use AirBnb etc. I did a solo trip to Barbados and the people there are just incredible, so generous and fun! Reply reply
