Stephen F. Austin State University (SFASU or SFA) is a public university in Nacogdoches, Texas. It was founded as a teachers' college in 1923 and subsequently renamed after one of Texas's founding fathers, Stephen F. Austin. Its campus resides on part of the homestead of Thomas Jefferson Rusk.
One of the most visible ways to show your Lumberjack spirit is our "Axe 'em, Jacks" hand sign. When the hand signal made its first appearance during a pep rally in fall 1979, it was instantly embraced by the student body. Since then, it has become the definitive symbol of SFA pride to generations of Lumberjacks.
The real Stephen F. Austin probably never caught a wave. But this iconic fountain – which features a statue of our school’s namesake surrounded by flowing water – is a beloved school landmark and has earned the affectionate nickname of “Surfin’ Steve.”
History is part of the fabric of the place we call SFA. The State Legislature had history in mind when they insisted that the name Stephen F. Austin go on the new college, even though in the legislation they specified a site "east of the 96th meridian." The state wanted to honor the Father of Texas.
