State Abbreviations for the 50 US States. The US has 50 states, a national capital along with commonwealths, and other territories around the world. Each state has its own unique shortened name codes called state abbreviations used in written documents and mailing addresses.
The International Organization for Standardization defines its country codes in standard 3166-1. ISO codes also consist of three capital letters in the alpha-3 version. For example, Germany has the IOC code "GER" for the English country name "Germany."

The United States Postal Service publishes this list of official 2-letter abbreviations for the 50 US states. The abbreviations are to be used when addressing mail. The two letters of each abbreviation are always capitalized and without periods. So, for example, the abbreviation for New York is NY and not N.Y. or Ny.

28 Ιουν 2023 · When referring to a state, the full name should be spelled out. US state abbreviations should be used for address purposes. Place them after a city's name and before a zip code. These are also helpful when learning the locations of the different states on a map.
