The Bible is a big book and can be difficult to understand. It can get complicated when there are differences of opinion about what the Bible says. Through the years, I’ve found that it’s helpful to have the Bible explained with a big-picture overview. We’ll take this approach in this article.
25 Αυγ 2018 · 1. The book is visual prophecy. One of the first things that help us understand the book is understanding what kind of book it is. John tells us in the opening chapter that what he has written is a prophecy from Jesus.
As its first verse declares, it is “The revelation from Jesus Christ … to show his servants what must soon take place” (Revelation 1:1). Much of Revelation was written in symbolic language, using word pictures and images that are sometimes difficult for modern readers to understand.
24 Δεκ 2017 · John depicts the reunion of heaven and earth as the descent of a new Jerusalem. Unlike the old Jerusalem that was corrupted and dishonored by most of Israel’s kings, the new Jerusalem would be ruled by a divine king. This new city would be built by God, not by human hands.
The prophet received his vision through poetic images free of any need for external consistency and conformity to reality. But this is what gives apocalyptic literature its impact. [6] The style allows God to communicate through the force of the images and movements He creates.
John’s vision in chapters 4 and 5 is at the heart of Revelation. It is in essence a visualization of the Lord’s Prayer: “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”. Through Jesus’ faithful witness and sacrificial death, God’s kingdom will come.
