Fatality Facts 2022. Males and females. Many more men than women die each year in motor vehicle crashes. Men typically drive more miles than women and are more likely to engage in risky driving practices, including not using seat belts, driving while impaired by alcohol and speeding.
This report provides national trends in motor vehicle traffic deaths by sex, age group, and type of road user (i.e., motor vehicle occupant, motorcyclist, pedestrian, or pedal cyclist) from 1999 through 2019 using the latest mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS).
The 32,479 traffic fatalities in 2011 were the lowest in 62 years, since 1949. For 2016, the NHTSA reported 37,461 people killed in 34,436 fatal motor vehicle crashes, an average of 102 per day. In 2022, there were 42,795 total motor vehicle fatalities.

At all ages, males had higher per capita crash death rates than females in 2022. Males ages 20 to 29 and those 85 and older had the highest rates of crash deaths, while females ages 12 and younger had the lowest rate.
In 2022, the death rate was 1.50 per 10,000 vehicles, a 95% improvement. In 1923, the first year miles driven was estimated, the motor-vehicle death rate was 18.65 deaths for every 100 million miles driven. Since 1923, the mileage death rate has decreased 93% and now stands at 1.33 deaths per 100 million miles driven.
