History. Río Grande was founded on July 16, 1840, by Desiderio and Quilimaco Escobar, with the approval of Governor Miguel López. It was named after the Río Grande and is located where the Río Grande and the Río Espíritu Santo join. In 1894, there were two sugar cane haciendas and 256 estancias growing minor fruits.

Río Grande was founded in July 25, 1840 by Deriderio Brothers and Quilimaco Escobar. The town was named after the great river that bathe its lands, Río Grande. Río Grande is located in the Northern Coastal Valley, only 30 minutes from San Juan.
Río Grande es conocido como la “Ciudad del Yunque”. La zona montañosa es parte del Bosque Nacional del Caribe, también conocido como la Sierra de Luquillo. Cabe mencionar que la mayor parte de este bosque está situada dentro del municipio de Río Grande.

Río Grande was founded by don Desiderio Escobar y Quilimaco Escobar, who were empowered by most of the neighbors of this region so that in their names they would ask authorization to populate. The governor Miguel López de Baños acceded and it was founded July 26, 1840.
