Large numbers are numbers above one million that are usually represented either with the use of an exponent such as 109 or by terms such as billion or thousand millions that frequently differ from system to system.
Some names of large numbers, such as million, billion, and trillion, have real referents in human experience, and are encountered in many contexts. At times, the names of large numbers have been forced into common usage as a result of hyperinflation.
The words bymillion and trimillion, and millions were first written to describe large numbers in 1475 by Jehan Adam. In 1484, Nicolas Chuquet used the words million, byllion, trillion, and even further to write larger numbers. Adam and Chuquet both used long scale. For example, Adam's bymillion (Chuquet's byllion) was used to write 10 12.
Million Billion Trillion. One million equals 1,000,000, i.e. one thousand thousand and is the natural number following 999,999 and preceding 1,000,001. One billion equals 1,000,000,000, i.e. one thousand million, and on the short scale, we write this as 10 9 (ten to the ninth power).
What's after trillion? The next number after trillion is quadrillion, or a 1 with 15 zeros after it: 1,000,000,000,000,000. Knowing the names of large numbers can be useful if you're working with extremely large values or doing higher-level mathematics.
