David Guzik commentary on Matthew 11, in which Jesus answers the question of the disciples of John the Baptist concerning His authenticity as the Messiah.
The least in heaven knows more, loves more, and does more in praising God, and receives more from him, than the greatest in this world. But by the kingdom of heaven here, is rather to be understood the kingdom of grace, the gospel dispensation in its power and purity.
What does Matthew 11:10 mean? The crowds following Jesus are now hearing about John the Baptist. Christ is reminding them that when the people went to see John in the wilderness, preaching about the kingdom and baptizing, he was strong and wore rough clothes (Matthew 11:7–9).
15 Δεκ 2013 · Particularly in 11:5 Jesus speaks of his mission in one of the clearest statements in the gospels about it: “the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them” (11:5).
This principle — greater light means greater responsibility — means that the western world has a tremendous accountability before God. The west has had an access to the gospel that no other society has, yet remains in desperate need of repentance.
Jesus uses a proverb to show that both He and John will be proven right in the end (Matthew 11:12–19). Next, Jesus pronounces judgment on the cities where the people did not repent, despite seeing Him perform great and powerful miracles.
Christ points them to what they heard and saw. Christ's gracious condescensions and compassions to the poor, show that it was he that should bring to the world the tender mercies of our God. Those things which men see and hear, if compared with the Scriptures, direct in what way salvation is to be found.
