2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (sometimes shortened, though inaccurately, to simply 'dioxin') [3] with the chemical formula C 12 H 4 Cl 4 O 2. Pure TCDD is a colorless solid with no distinguishable odor at room temperature.
2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (TCDD) is the most toxic of the family of 210 compounds. Seventeen of these PCDD/F compounds having chlorines in the 2,3,7, and 8 positions are designated for special concern because their shape makes them particularly bioactive.

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon (HAH) and widespread environmental pollutant (Poland and Knutson, 1982). TCDD is lipophilic and has a slow rate of metabolism and excretion; thus, it readily concentrates in the food chain (Safe et al., 1991).

TCDD is an animal teratogen and carcinogen that is well characterized for causing immunosuppression through activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR).
2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, also known as dioxin; TCDBD; TCDD; 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin; 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-1,4-dioxin; and 2,3,7,8-TCDD, has no commercial uses (USEPA 1985a). Its structure and properties are shown in Table 1.

TCDD was first listed in the Second Annual Report on Carcinogens as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.
