Il LEI si iniziò ad usare solo a partire dal 1500 come forma di cortesia estremamente formale riservata a persone autorevoli e degne di gran rispetto. La diffusione dell’uso del Lei sembrerebbe derivare dall’influenza spagnola nella penisola italiana.
In Italian you use the second person form “tu” (you) when speaking to someone you know or someone of your own age or younger, but the third person form “lei” (he/she) when being formal. In effect, you demonstrate formality when speaking to someone by using “he/she” instead of “you” (“his/her” instead of “your”, and so on).

In the chapter "Il verbo [1]" of the book Grammatica e pratica della lingua italiana per studenti stranieri, by Federica Colombo, you can read: Per la forma di cortesia si usa la 3ª persona singolare. Some examples from this book are the following:
Lei (usually written with a capital letter, but not necessarily) is formal and required when addressing strangers, adults, and people in authority, male or female: Abita qui a Roma, Signora? (Are you from Rome, Madam?). Italian use formal Lei to address both male and female people
30 Μαρ 2017 · Per il singolare si usa il pronome lei. Si usa la terza persona perché, nell’usarla, è come se non ci si rivolgesse direttamente all’interlocutore interessato, ma all'”autorità” che rappresenta o può rappresentare.
Dubbio linguistico: quando si dà del lei interloquendo con qualcuno, tutti gli accordi (aggettivi a lui rivolti, ad esempio) vanno alla terza persona singolare femminile? Gli dico ad esempio: "Lo faccia lei stessa" pur parlando ad un uomo, o "Lo faccia lei stesso"?
