Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, for example, by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations. Grade 7 – Ratio and Proportional Relationships (7.RP.A.2)
Ratios. A ratio compares values. A ratio says how much of one thing there is compared to another thing. There are 3 blue squares to 1 yellow square. Ratios can be shown in different ways: A ratio can be scaled up: Here the ratio is also 3 blue squares to 1 yellow square, even though there are more squares. Try it Yourself. Using Ratios.
Rate problems. In this math lesson, we learn to find unit rates and use them to solve problems. We first calculate the rate for one unit, like cars washed per day or cost per battery. Then, we multiply the unit rate by the desired quantity to find the answer.
The video explains ratios, which show the relationship between two quantities. Using apples and oranges as an example, it demonstrates how to calculate and reduce ratios (6:9 to 2:3) and how to reverse the ratio (9:6 to 3:2). Created by Sal Khan.
A rate is simply a specific type of ratio. The difference is that a rate is a comparison of two numbers with different units, whereas a ratio compares two numbers with the same unit. In mathematics, a ratio indicates how many times one number contains another.
