However, the decline in neonatal mortality from 1990 to 2022 has been slower than that of post-neonatal under-5 mortality. There are approximately 6 300 newborn deaths every day, amounting to nearly 47% of all child deaths under the age of 5-years.
80% of all newborn deaths result from three preventable and treatable conditions: complications due to prematurity, intrapartum-related deaths (including birth asphyxia) and neonatal infections. Proven, cost-effective, interventions exist to prevent and treat each of these main causes of death.
In 2021, an estimated 2.3 million children died in their first month of life, which is approximately 6,400 newborns every day, with about a third of all neonatal deaths occurring within the first day after birth and close to three quarters occurring within the first week of life.

There are two targets: Reduce newborn mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1000 live births in every country; and.
